88. The Concept of Net Zero Emissions

The term "Net Zero Emissions" refers to achieving a balance between the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. It does not mean zero emissions altogether, but rather that any unavoidable emissions are offset by equivalent removal.

How is Net Zero achieved?

Reducing Emissions: Shifting away from fossil fuels to renewable energy (solar, wind), improving energy efficiency, and changing land use practices.

Removing Emissions (Offsetting):

Natural Methods: Planting trees (afforestation/reforestation) which naturally absorb carbon dioxide (

).

Technological Methods: Using Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies to directly suck

out of the air or from industrial sources and store it underground.

Achieving global Net Zero by 2050 is widely considered essential to limit global warming to

1.5

 C

above pre-industrial levels, as set out in the Paris Agreement.

Question:

Many countries and large corporations have set a Net Zero target. What, in your opinion, is the biggest challenge (e.g., funding, technological development, political will, or public buy-in) to successfully achieving these ambitious goals?
